Abstract
The success of cellular services, combined with the increased presence of l aptop computers and the rapid growth in the number of Internet users, indic ates that wireless data should have a very bright future. Nevertheless, tod ay the number of wireless data subscribers is small, with the most formidab le obstacle to user acceptance being the performance limitations of existin g services and products. This article discusses combining enhanced data rat es for GSM evolution (EDGE) with wideband orthogonal frequency-division mul tiplexing in an asymmetrical solution to provide high-speed data rates, wit h wide-area coverage and good quality, for wireless packet data services.
