This paper reports on a new approach to solve the short-term operation plan
ning problem of hydrothermal power systems. It uses evolution strategies to
determine the optimal schedules of all hydroelectric and thermal power pla
nts in a closed optimization. A decomposition of the optimization problem i
s not necessary. Numerical experiments show, that the proposed method is ab
le to solve the complex non-linear optimization problem with its wealth of
constraints in acceptable computation time.
