Abstract
Reaction of [Os-7(CO)(21)] with two equivalents of Me3NO in CH2Cl2/MeCN aff orded the labile cluster [Os-7(CO)(19)(MeCN)(2)]. Treatment of this cluster derivative with one equivalent of bis(diphenylphosphino) ferrocene (dppf) in CH2Cl2 at ambient conditions afforded a new heptaosmium cluster [Os-7(CO )(17)(mu-eta(2)-CO) (MeCN) (mu-dppf)] (1) in moderate yield. The molecular structure of 1 consists of an unprecedented heptanuclear metal skeleton wit h a 'spiked' Os atom appended at the equatorial plane of the capped trigona l bipyramid. Voltammetric analysis of this compound suggested some electron ic/electrostatic interactions between the cluster cage and ferrocene metal centre. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
