The Rugopharynx australis complex from macropodid marsupials is revised. Th
e nominal taxon is limited to specimens occurring in the type host, Macropu
s rufus, and similar nematodes in sympatric host species, M. fuliginosus, M
. giganteus, M. robustus and Petrogale xanthopus. A single occurrence is re
ported in M. dorsalis. The following new species are described: R. macropod
is, sp. nov. from M. fuliginosus and M. giganteus; R. pi, sp. nov. from M.
rufogriseus and M. parryi; R. rho, sp. nov. from M. eugenii, M. fuliginosus
, M. irma and Petrogale lateralis; R. longispicularis, sp. nov. from M. par
ma; R. mu, sp. nov. from Wallabia bicolor; R. spratti, sp. nov. from M. ruf
ogriseus; R. chi, sp. nov. from Thylogale billardierii; R. tau, sp. nov. fr
om Th. thetis and R. petrogale, sp. nov. from Petrogale penicillata, P. her
berti and P. inornata. Rugopharynx alpha (Johnston & Mawson, 1938) is resur
rected for specimens from Petrogale lateralis from central Australia and no
rth western Queensland. Specimens from Petrogale lateralis pearsoni from So
uth Australia and P. l. lateralis from Western Australia were not assigned
to a species. A key to the species of Rugopharynx is provided.
