Shaping of 16 fs optical pulses using a twisted-nematic (TN) liquid-crystal
spatial-light modulator (SLM) was conducted. The propel-ties of TN SLMs we
re characterized theoretically and experimentally, and the relevant mode ex
traction method was developed for the SLM mask pattern design using a simul
ated annealing algorithm. Phase-sensitive pulse shaping using a TN SLM was
performed and the shaped waveforms were observed by measuring the interfero
metric intensity cross-correlation with unshaped pulses.
