Abstract
A new intermetallic in the Ca-Au phase field has been synthesised, using an unusual high-pressure route, with the stoichiometry Ca3Au4. The structure of the intermetallic was investigated using powder X-ray and powder neutron diffraction techniques. Ca3Au4 adopts the Pu3Pd4 structure type, which cry stallises in the rhombohedral space group R (3) over bar containing 42 atom s in a hexagonal unit cell. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A.
