H. Nakayama et K. Aida, The measurement of heat capacity differences due to the change of water structure in aqueous solutions of organic compounds, J THERM ANA, 56(3), 1999, pp. 1367-1373
In order to observe more directly the structural organization of water mole
cules around a nonpolar molecule in an aqueous solution, heat capacity diff
erences between two kinds of solutions (solution I and II) of quaternary am
monium salts were measured. In the solution I stable water structure was re
tained as much as possible and in the solution II water structure was destr
oyed either by heating to high temperatures or by irradiating with ultrason
ic waves. It was found that the heat capacity differences ((C-p)(II)-(C-p)(
I)) were slightly positive and its maximum values corresponded to 7-8 perce
nt of the heat capacity of pure water itself.
