High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) studies indicate a
compensation of the strain fields of the dislocations involved in the hexa
gonal close packed to double hexagonal close packed transformation of Co-Fe
. In the HRTEM images only the edge component of the dislocations can be de
termined by Burgers circuits whereas the screw components are expected to c
ause an Eshelby twist in the thin foils. The influence of the Eshelby twist
on HRTEM images was determined by contrast simulations. Dislocation arrang
ements with compensating screw components can be distinguished form those w
ith non-compensating screw components. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All r
