Tnt. Phan et al., New silica gels functionalized with 2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin using coating or grafting methods, PCCP PHYS C, 1(22), 1999, pp. 5189-5195
The synthesis of a large range of supports based on silica functionalized b
y a new derivative of beta-cyclodextrin, 2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxypropyl-
beta-cyclodextrin (beta CDMAHP monomer), is described. Two methods of react
ion were chosen: (1) coating via a radical polymerization of the beta CDMAH
P monomer (E1 series) and (2) radical grafting after silanization of silica
using gamma-methacryloyltrimethoxysilane (G1 series). As a preliminary ste
p, a detailed spectroscopic characterization of the beta CDMAHP was underta
ken. Subsequently, within the two approaches, the experimental conditions w
ere varied in order to investigate the effect on the beta CD content in the
functionalized supports. The changes in the porosity of the silica were al
so analysed. Finally, a comparison of the two methods is discussed, bearing
in mind that these sorbents are to be used for water decontamination appli
cations.
