Abstract
Productids, corals and crinoid stems have been used to determine the palaeo current direction and velocity in the 'Fossil Posts' of the Great/Main Lime stone of the Alston and Askrigg Blocks. In Yorkshire the predominant curren t direction was from the south. In Teesdale and Weardale the current was fr om the south-east, becoming more from the east in the head of Weardale. The current velocity, as determined by the presence of orientated corals, Lati productus, Gigantoproductus or crinoids, falls within the narrow range of 1 5 to 30 cm/s.
