The hypothesis that High and Low Materialism groups have different personal
ity profiles was rested with 280 introductory psychology students (135 men
and 114 women) who completed the Belk Materialism Scale and the NEO Five-Fa
ctor Inventory for partial course credit. Results of discriminant function
analysis supported the hypothesis, indicating that groups High and Low in M
aterialism had significantly different personality profiles and that the st
andard discriminant function coefficients were substantial (>.30): for Neur
oticism -.59, Agreeableness .53, and Openness .32.
