S. Mackowski et al., Magnetooptical properties of CdTe quantum well structures with quaternary CdMnMgTe barriers, SEMIC SCI T, 14(11), 1999, pp. 979-983
The optical properties of CdTe single quantum wells (QWs) with barriers mad
e of quaternary CdMnMgTe grown by molecular beam epitaxy have been investig
ated by use of photoluminescence and reflectivity spectroscopy. The spectra
are characterized by small linewidths and small Stokes shifts indicating a
high quality of the structures. Apart From optical features related to con
fined excitons, an additional line attributed to donor-bound excitons was a
lso observed in majority of the structures. The use of a quaternary materia
l for the barriers made it possible to keep the depth of the confining pote
ntial constant while varying the amount of the magnetic component. The latt
er, via the sp-d exchange interaction, is the main contributor to the spin
splitting of the carriers. The Zeeman splitting of the excitons confined in
the QWs was analysed under an assumption that the interfaces are not abrup
t. The obtained values of the Mn intermixing lengths are about 5 Angstrom w
hich is typical for CdTe-based QWs with barriers made of ternary compounds.
