The effect of Li preadsorption on the kinetics of CO oxidation on a highly
(111) textured polycrystalline Pt surface has been investigated using mass
spectrometry to analyse the components of the reaction. Li preadsorption de
creases the reaction rate and with a full Li monolayer the oxidation is com
pletely damped. A Monte Carlo simulation of the reaction on an alkali-preco
vered Pt(111) surface clarifies the role of the dipole moments of alkali ad
atoms and related rates of increase of the sticking coefficient for oxygen
adsorption in the efficiency of the promoters. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.
