Measurements on eighteen (COOH)-C-13-labeled acids, including hydrogen-bond
ed and non-hydrogen-bonded standards are self-consistent and suggest strong
ly that the aqueous pK(a)s of bilirubin are within the normal range for ali
phatic carboxylic acids. Our empirical observations provide further evidenc
e that the C-13-NMR method is valid when suitable buffers, DMSO concentrati
ons and extrapolations are used and refute recent suggestions to the contra
ry. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
