Abstract
A model is outlined for the major biochemical respiratory mechanisms of a c onceptualised heterotrophic facultative organism (representing the heterotr ophic facultative mass of activated sludge) subjected to four different set s of conditions: steady-state aerobic, steady-state anoxic, steady-state ae robic changed to anoxic, and steady-state anoxic/anaerobic changed to aerob ic. Proposals and implications of the model regarding changes between these conditions are tested experimentally and verified with special aerobic bat ch tests on sludges from 1 AND, 2RND, MUCT, continuous aerobic, and continu ous anoxic systems fed municipal sewage.
