Examples are given for the possible uses and characteristics of direct driv
es. It is evident that the technical and economic characteristics of direct
drives and their suitability to solve particular problems cannot be proper
ly assessed except within the context of a motive power system or plant. Va
rious machine designs are compared and specific data are presented especial
ly for slow-speed high-momentum drives. Htrs, too, it is apparent that beca
use of the multitude of different specific characteristics of such machine
designs, there is no universal drive, but that the selection must be made i
n accordance with the particular requirements of the user.
