Pf. Casas et al., Randomized study comparing the effect on bone mass of Calcitriol or Alendronate with or without HRT in postmenopausal women with osteopenia or osteoporosis, 9TH INTERNATIONAL MENOPAUSE SOCIETY WORLD CONGRESS ON THE MENOPAUSE, 1999, pp. 91-94
112 ambulatory, osteopenic or osteoporotic postmenopausal women (according
with WHO criteria's). were allocated in four arms to receive: Calcitriol (C
T) 0.50ug/day or Alendronate (AL) 10mg/day alone (arm C & D) or in combinat
ion with CC-HRT (combined continuous oral micronized estradiol 2mg + Medrox
iprogesterone 5mg/day) (arm A & B) during 12 months. Treatments efficacy wa
s evaluate by changes in bone mineral density (BMD) after 12 months. All tr
eatments increased BMD after one year. CC-THR combined with CT or AL was be
tter than CT or AL alone. AL alone offered 3.5% increase of BMD and it was
more effective than CT alone.
