The synthesis and characterization of two new solid complexes of vanadyl(IV
) cation is described. Spectral measurements (IR and electronic spectra) sh
ow that the saccharide interacts through the phosphate group of the ligand
and that according to the experimental conditions this group could act as m
ono or bidentate. The interaction through deprotonated hydroxyl groups (as
in glucose) is hindered because of the lack of hydroxyl groups in cis posit
ion. These results are also supported by elemental and thermogravimetric an
alysis as well as magnetochemical measurements.
