This article discusses central nervous system infections in children 5 to 1
8 veers of age, particularly focusing on the outcome of these diseases. The
CNS infections reviewed include HIV-1, meningitis (bacterial and viral), e
ncephalitis, Lyme disease, and chronic fatigue syndrome. Following these in
fections, children and adolescents may develop neurologic and psychiatric s
equelae, which can be transient or chronic requiring long-term therapy. The
refore, understanding the post-infectious sequelae becomes important in the
management of these patients.
