Abstract
The nineteenth-century geological theory of J. Muir; an amateur, attributin g the formation of Yosemite Valley in California almost sorely to glacial e rosion, outrightly contradicted a catastrophist model proposed by J. D. Whi tney, the state geologist. In recent years, Muir's theory has been shown to be more nearly correct.
