We report the case of a patient suffering from dysthymia. He underwent succ
essful ECT treatment and was medicated with nefazodone and midazolam. Compa
ring the EEG and motor seizure duration in the periods with and without mid
azolam, no significant differences were recorded, but the dosage of thiopen
tal and of succinylcholine had to be increased markedly after midazolam was
discontinued (P < 0.05; ANOVA). This case indicates a substantial pharmaco
dynamic interaction between nefazodone, midazolam, thiopental, and succinyl
choline. (C) 1999 Editions scientifiques et medicales Elsevier SAS.
