The purpose of the present research was to develop and validate a motivatio
nal scale of motivation toward family activities (EMAF). This scale measure
s different types of extrinsic motivation (identified regulation, introject
ed regulation and external regulation) and intrinsic motivation toward fami
ly activities. Three studies were conducted to develop and validate the EMA
F. Overall, results show that EMAF is formed of four factors that are inter
nally consistent. A confirmatory factorial analysis (EQS) also confirmed th
e four factor structure of the EMAF. In addition, the validity of the scale
was supported by : (1) a simplex-like pattern of correlations among the fo
ur subscales, (2) significant correlations between the EMAF and some variab
les (i.e., family life satisfaction, work-family conflict, intrusions, perc
eptions of competence, autonomy and family support). In sum, the present re
sults provide preliminary support for the reliability and validity of the E
MAF. Finally, a general discussion of the methodological contributions of t
he EMAF, limits and ideas for future research are presented.
