The first two of the quartet, completeness, continuity, consistency and cor
rectness conditions, required for the development of robust displacement ba
sed finite elements are well understood as far as the anisoparametric eleme
nts are concerned. When such elements are formulated (primarily for accurac
y due to their improved consistent load and mass capabilities) by incorpora
ting transverse shear deformation effect, it becomes necessary to study the
next two of the quartet-(field) consistency and (variational) correctness
aspects and to explore further their susceptibility for spurious effects su
ch as locking, stress oscillations etc. Such a study on a typical anisopara
metric element formulation is presented in this paper, (C) 1999 Elsevier Sc
