Abstract
The evolution of the characteristic electron energy loss spectra accompanyi ng the deposition of cesium on GaAs(100) surfaces with various superstructu ral reconstructions is studied experimentally. It is shown that the appeara nce of loss peaks in the GaAs band gap for Cs coverages theta(Cs)> 0.5 mono layers is due to resonances in the longitudinal and transverse polarizabili ty of two-dimensional metallic clusters of adatoms.
