On finite subgroups of exceptional algebraic groups

We consider a modular version of the problem of determining the finite subg roups of simple algebraic groups of exceptional type over C. Let G be a sim ple algebraic group of exceptional type over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p. Our main result determines those finite simple groups, not of Lie type in characteristic p, a cover of which embeds in G.
