Nanoparticles of zinc sulphide have been synthesized by a chemical method.
Mercaptoethanol is used to passivate the surface of the particles. Under ce
rtain conditions highly luminescent particles emitting blue light at simila
r to 425 nm can be synthesized. This blue light emission in nanoparticles o
f zinc sulphide is observed to be completely quenched when doped with iron
or nickel metal ions. (C) 1999 Kluwer Academic Publishers.
