Nucleon structure functions are studied within the chiral soliton appr
oach to the bosonized Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. The valence quark appr
oximation is employed which is justified for moderate constituent quar
k masses (similar to 400 MeV) as the contribution of the valence quark
level dominates the predictions of nucleon properties. As examples th
e unpolarized structure functions for the nu p and <(nu)over bar>p sca
ttering and the structure functions entering the Gottfried sum rule ar
e discussed. For the latter the model prediction is found to reasonabl
y well agree with a corresponding low-scale parametrization of the emp
irical data. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
