A novel cyclobutenedione-containing poly(phenylenevinylene) (PPV) was obtai
ned from 3,4-bis(4-bromomethylphenyl)-3-cyclobutene-1,2-dione via modified
1, 12-polydehydrohalogenation. This resultant polymer, soluble in polar apr
otic solvents, exhibits a regioregular structure of alternating cis- and tr
ans-vinylene units. The present polymer exhibits photoluminescence with a m
aximum at 472 nm, corresponding to the blue emission region, in DMAc soluti
on, and a red-shift emission at 574 nm in the film.
