Polyurethane-poly(4-vinylpyridine) multiblock copolymers have been pre
pared by the decomposition of a tetraphenylethane-based polyurethane m
acroiniferter in the presence of 4-vinylpyridine. The increase in the
molecular weight and conversion with an increase in polymerization tim
e proves the ''living'' radical mechanism. The polyurethanepoly(4-viny
lpyridine) multiblock copolymers so obtained were converted into their
zwitterionomers by treating with gamma-propane sultone. Both block co
polymers and their zwitterionomers have been characterized using spect
ral and thermal techniques.
