Abstract
The distribution of velocity and directions of dissolved carbon dioxide, ni trogen and argon molecules escaping from liquid water into the vapour has b een analysed. The distributions were found to agree well with those predict ed from the thermal flux distribution and not with the recent theory for ev aporation proposed by Phillips. Possible reasons for this are discussed.
