The derivation of general fundamental solutions of differential operat
ors on tensor fields is converted, through Hormander's method, in sear
ch of general fundamental solutions of operators on scalar fields. One
resorts to the theory of distributions in order to guarantee the exis
tence of the generalized functions required in the formulation. The pr
ocedure is applied in the determination of general fundamental solutio
ns of some well known linear elliptic differential operators of the co
ntinuum mechanics. The study concludes that the use of general fundame
ntal solutions can be computationally advantageous. Copyright (C) 1996
