Abstract
During the last 10 years, we have developed a very bright gas ion source ba sed on the principle of field ionization. By producing a tiny protrusion, a 'supertip', on top of a broad regular emitter ion beams with brightnesses of up to 1 TA/cm(2) sr have been realized for a variety of gaseous elements , including H-2(+), He+, Ne+ and O-2(+).
