Abstract
Micro-Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) analysis was applied to determ ine the ionic composition of different layers of human placental vessels. T he laminae of arterial walls were clearly identified by means of their elem ental maps. In the same manner, the endothelial cells bordering the lumen w ere identified, cell by cell, and analyzed separately. Using this model, we investigated the influence of incubations in various physiological fluids on the ionic composition of the walls and of endothelial cells. (C) 1999 El sevier Science B.V.
