The dynamic response of 4f-electron-lattice interactions in YbPO4 was chara
cterized by neutron spectroscopy using single-crystal specimens. The Yb3+:F
-2(7/2) ground multiplet shows broadened and overdamped energy levels. A co
upling of the upper Gamma(6) and Gamma(7) states with optic phonons was obs
erved throughout the Brillouin zone, resulting in a strong renormalization
of the bare crystal-field and phonon excitation spectra over the 15 to 475
K temperature range. A mechanism involving monopolar fluctuations of the Yb
f orbital is proposed. [S0163-1829(99)50642-5].
