We report on specific heat, magnetisation and neutron diffraction resu
lts for the hexagonal, magnetically frustrated system CsCuCl3. In an e
xternal field orthogonal to the c-axis, above 5 Tesla, an abrupt trans
ition to a new magnetic phase is found, clearly in the specific heat,
less clearly in the magnetisation. The available field up to 6 Tesla f
or the neutron experiments proved not high enough to extract the struc
ture of this phase. The Neel temperature rises in the field and the co
ntinuous transition to the paramagnetic phase seems to be of an unusua
l nature. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
