An exact dispersion relation for the guided modes of a four-layer planar st
ructure with an exponential permittivity profile in the main waveguide laye
r (slab) is derived for the first time on the basis of the wave approach. P
eriodicity of the mode characteristics as functions of the cladding thickne
ss is established. The dependence of the energy flux distributions of vario
us modes in the waveguide structure on the thicknesses of the cladding and
