In 1990, Petroleos de Venezuela, S, A. (PDVSA), considering future gasoline
market scenarios and environmental regulations, acquired ETHEROL(R) techno
logy for producing oxygenate in Venezuelan refineries, with the aim of subs
tituting lead tetraetile in the gasoline produced for exports. The right to
use ETHEROL(R) technology, as well as the right to licenciate the technolo
gy to third parties under "non exclusive" terms was acquired from British P
etroleum (BP). The acquisition also included a capture and assimilation of
technology expertise, and Intevep was assigned the custody of this technolo
gy This paper presents a summary of the different phases of technology tran
sfer process, from acquisition to current stage, and the role hat Intevep h
as played in the successful implementation of the technology.
