Expression of VCAM-1 during allergic reaction in asthmatic patients. Effects of specific immunotherapy

The VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 expression in the skin intercellular microenvironment was evaluated both in basal conditions and during a specific allergic indu ced reaction. The influence of specific immunotherapy on these soluble adhe sion molecules was also analysed. In allergic patients, submitted to SIT, t he sVCAM-1 value on allergic stimulated skin decrease to levels showed in h ealthy skin which are also similar to those found in non-allergies. This st udy suggests that the blocking on this adhesion molecule is one of the targ et mechanisms of successful immunotherapy.
