Abstract
Based on the Lagrangian formulation, we present a new variational appr oach to study the influence of cross-phase modulation on solitonlike p ulse switching in twin-core fiber couplers and birefringent fibers. Fo r self-routing pulse switching we found an excellent agreement between our finite-dimensional Hamiltonian system and the split-step Fourier method. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
