As pig production intensifies, so does the role of the respiratory virus. T
his article describes three viral pathogens-pseudorabies virus, swine influ
enza virus, and porcine respiratory coronavirus-known to be significant con
tributors to respiratory disease problems experienced in nursery pig produc
tion. (Although porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus is not
described in this article, several references are provided for interested r
eaders.) An overview of the cause, epidemiology, clinical signs, diagnosis,
and control measures of each virus is provided.
