Abstract
Afield study was conducted during 1993-94 to 1994-95 on the physical proper ties of soil induced by Sesbania green mauring and greengram (Phaseolus rad iatus Roxb.) residue incorporation on a sandy clay loam soil (Typic Ustochr ept) under rice (Oryza sativa L.) - wheat (Triticum aestivum L. emend. Fior i & Paol.) cropping system. Sesbania green manuring and greengram residue i ncorporation resulted in reduction in bulk density and increase in soil agg regation which in turn increased infiltration and percolation rate and hydr aulic conductivity of soil. The effect of Sesbania green manuring and green gram residue incorporation for improving the physical condition of soil con ducive to better transmission properties was more conspicuous where 120 kg N/ha was applied to rice indicating the beneficial role of increased root b iomass production in fertilized plot.
