Velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) refers to the mobility of the velopharyn
geal sphincter to adequately separate the nasal cavity from the oral cavity
during speech. The auditory result of this structural problem is hyperrhin
ophy, abnormal resonance and the production of distracting noises during sp
eech created by turbulent airflow escaping from the nasal cavity. (C) 1999
