An exact solution to a problem of generating internal waves and boundary cu
rrents in a viscous exponentially stratified fluid by a periodically moving
part of a plane is compared to measurements of beams of internal waves gen
erated by a rigid finite-width strip vibrating along its surface. The struc
ture of a wave beam is always in agreement with the calculated one. The wav
e amplitude is calculated exactly in a nondegenerate case. In the critical
case when two beams propagate in the plane of source oscillations, the calc
ulations lead to overestimated values of amplitudes.
