The reactivity of di- and triphenyltin(Iv) hydroxamate complexes of composi
tion (C6H5)(2)SnCl2-n(HBHA)(n) and (C6H5)(3)Sn(XBHA) (n = 1 and 2; X = p-OM
e, o-Cl, p-NO2; BHA = anion of XArCONHOK) with ligands containing labile pr
otons such as acetylacetone (acacH), dibenzoylmethane (dbmH), salicylaldehy
de (salH) and o-chlorophenol and thiophenol has been studied to investigate
the preferential attack on Sn-C, Sn-CI or Sn-O bond. The title complexes d
o not react with the chelating ligands. However, the reactions of (C6H5)(2)
SnCl(XBHA) with sodium salt of the chelating ligands Naf, (L = acac, dbm an
d sal) readily proceed to yield the mixed ligand complexes of composition (
C6H5)(2)Sn(XBHA).L, while the treatment of (C(6)A(5))(2)Sn(XBHA)(2) and (C6
H5)(3)Sn(XBHA) with phenols results in the complete displacement of the hyd
roxamate group With the phenolate ion.
