L. Frankfurt et al., Hadronic properties of the S-11(1535) resonance studied by electroproduction off the deuteron - art. no. 055202, PHYS REV C, 6005(5), 1999, pp. 5202
We propose a new method for studying properties of excited states of hadron
s based on electroproduction of baryon resonances from the deuteron. The me
asurement is capable of distinguishing between competing models of a specif
ic resonance by exploiting the sensitivity of the cross section to the radi
us and compositeness of the resonances. These studies are made feasible, in
part, by the strong hadronic reinteraction of the resonance with the spect
ator neutron in specific kinematic situations. We establish our claims by s
tudying the reaction d[e,e'S-11(1535)]N for Q(2)greater than or equal to 1
GeV2, where the S-11 suffers a prominent final state interaction. Sensitivi
ty to the model is established by comparing numerical results obtained from
a constituent quark model and an effective chiral Lagrangian model of the
S-11. [S0556-2813(99)01410-7].
