Abstract
The reactions and the reaction products formed in a surface region where no particles from the gas phase can penetrate (subsurface) differ considerabl y from those in the outer surface. Experimental evidence for these reaction s is shown in the paper. The role of the subsurface in the macroscopic prop erties of a surface is discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A.
