V. Vikberg et M. Nuorteva, ON THE REARING OF NESOSELANDRIA-MORIO (FABRICIUS) AND BIRKA-CINEREIPES (KLUG) (HYMENOPTERA, TENTHREDINIDAE), WITH DESCRIPTIONS OF THEIR LARVAE, Entomologica Fennica, 8(1), 1997, pp. 27-38
The larva of a Holarctic selandrine sawfly Nesoselandria morio (Fabric
ius) from southern Finland which feeds on mosses is described. Compare
d with the larva of Birka cinereipes (Klug), which feeds on forget-me-
nets (Myosotis scorpioides), it shows some apomorphic characters: fusi
on of four apical antennal segments and reduction of sixth dorsal annu
let on the third abdominal segment. It is the first sawfly larva known
to feed on mosses (Bryopsida). The cocoon has a special structure. Th
e larvae of the tribe Aneugmenini have an extra moult after the feedin
g period and differ in that respect from known larvae of Strongylogast
erini and Dolerini.
