The "Gymnasium" was re-introduced in the new Laender with the school-relate
d structural changes of 1991. In their research, the autors focus on the in
fluence this situatuion has had on the development of individual schools. B
y drawing on both qualitative and quantitative procedures, comparative find
ings were collecte at select "Gymnasien" in both Thuringia (1995) and Bavar
ia (1997). The theoretical points of reference of both sudies were provided
by transformation research and research on the quality of schools. This le
d, on the one hand, to the question whether and, if so, how "long-term ment
al formations" determine the transformation process in a specific way. On t
he other hand, differences between the school structure of "Gymnasien" in E
ast and in West Germany were investigated within the framework of three cen
tral fields of schooling - the culture of learning, of education, and of or
ganization.
