We report a mutation in the parE genes of ho in vitro mutants of Strep
tocaccus pneunoniae responsible for low-level resistance to fluoroquin
olones. Sequential acquisition of mutations in parE and gyr.4 lends to
higher levels of resistance. This confirms that topoisomerase IV is t
he primary target of fluoroquinolones in S. pneumoniae.
