Acute pancreatitis may involve remote organ systems, including the eye. Fun
duscopy may reveal in these rare cases presence of a typical ischemic retin
opathy, similar to that diagnosed after severe traumas, known as the Purtsc
her's retinopathy. Pathogenesis of retinopathy in alcoholic retinopathy rem
ains controversial: occurrence of fat embolism or leucothrombosis is discus
sed in the literature.
The outcome of ischemic retinopathy in acute alcoholic pancreatitis is vari
able. Although there is no specific available treatment, its diagnosis may
allow appropriate diagnosis of the causal disease when the general signs ar
e not present.
